Verb Agreement
Module: APE5  Grades 7 - 12, remedial, Adult Literacy, ESL, LD
Hard Disk Space of  Module: 1.29 MB
Curriculum Content: Teaches how subjects and verbs agree at a more advanced level than is found in Module B5E. Treats in detail the verb usage rules for joining a compound subject by "and" as well as joining singular subjects by "or" or "nor." Provides ample practice in identifying subjects correctly as to number for verb agreement. Teaches how to distinguish objects of prepositions from subjects of sentences. Other topics: tenses; "to be" verbs; helping verbs; and verb agreement issues for contractions and indefinite pronouns; rules and exceptions for verb agreement with compound subjects; and when to double the last consonant in past tense verbs.
Features: Interactive module reinforces correct responses and has remedial branching for incorrect responses. Pre and post tests are randomized. Item Analysis is shown prior to the scoring frame.

Rate for Comprehension is a special program for training your mind and eyes to read more quickly and more accurately. Carefully structured speed reading practice raises reading comprehension levels. Practice in knowing "how to see to read" has pre-reading word skills, the story, vocabulary, phonics, spelling, syntax, and ample comprehension activities. The story section turns the computer into a tachistoscope, a phrase flasher. Students have options to read flash frames presented at 150 through 500 words per minute. The stories capture attention by their unique controlled rate of presentation as well as by their high interest content. History, geography, inventions, literature, and science come to life. Sample lesson is 4th-5th grade reading level; interest level is 4 - adult                                                                        .(top)

The Fraction Concept   Animated graphics show Fractional Models. Writing fractions in words. Defines numerator, denominator, division line, equal parts of a set, unequal parts of a set. Tutorial on whole numbers, mixed numbers, proper-improper fractions, like fractions, unlike fractions, reading fractions, and equality of units. Applications and problems. Sample lesson is developmentally for grades 4-6, and is used remedially 7- adult.

The Achievement Prep Series - Fractions 9.27 MB
Purpose
The instruction in this course is aimed at all students. Because of the educational design and the features for remediation, the course is particularly suited for students who have been unable to gain a proficiency with fractions. The course serves as a comprehensive, sequential, stand-alone, tutorial course.

Design
The design of the course engenders a confidence that comes from learning step-by-step. Pretests lead a student to where s/he should begin. Tutorials and graphical representations are structured and sequenced carefully. Correct responses reinforce the essences of why the response is correct. Incorrect responses lead to redoing part of a tutorial or to branching that breaks down subject matter into smaller steps. Full color frames vary in formats to enhance interest. The functional use of color and motion is applied to fractions throughout the course to clarify concepts and capture attention. Built into the presentation of the intricacies of working with fractions are remedies for the kind of errors students frequently make. (top)

Students have options throughout the course to repeat instructional sequences. Students also may elect to redo portions of a lesson and to improve their score on that portion. The frame presenting this option appears only if a student's score is less than 100% for that lesson's portion. The course saves the new score and the student is rewarded with seeing his new score at the end of the course. Students and teachers both benefit from the feature of item analysis. This features keeps track of the kind of errors being made.

Grade Levels
Beginning lessons are at a fourth grade level. The course progresses through the sixth grade developmentally. Remedially, the course is well-suited for grades 7-12 and adult education. The course is adult in terms of text, tone, and graphics.                                                            (top)

Lesson #1 - Algebraic Expressions
Randomized pretest. The lesson focuses on representing and using arithmetical operations within pre-algebra and algebra courses. It defines all parts of an expression. Powers, roots, and order of operations are taught as a needed familiarity for simplifying expressions and thinking algebraically. Animated graphics clarify the sequences and procedures of simplifying expressions . Two sections of basic concept checks reinforce correct answers and provide immediate correction of incorrect responses. Randomized post test.
